The history of the birth of Australia which came out of the suffereing and brutality of England's infamous convict transportation system. With 16 pages of illustrations and 3 maps.
An extraordinary volume--even a masterpiece--about the early history of Australia that reads like the finest of novels. Hughes captures everything in this complex tableau with narrative finesse that drives the reader ever-deeper into specific facts and greater understanding. He presents compassionate understanding of the plights of colonists--both freemen and convicts--and the Aboriginal peoples they displaced. One of the very best works of history I have ever read.
WEE BEASTIES- BUTTERFLY #8- "THE LAND OF THE GIANTS"
(BEST VIEWED BY LARGE GIANTS)
"Atlantic Air Traffic Control please respond! Over?
This is sub-orbital Flight 612 Spindrift, out of New York en route to London.
Aircraft down. Repeat, aircraft down! No casualties but we are unable to lift without repairs.
Our present location is unknown....repeat, unknown.
After an encounter with an unidentified phenomenon over the Atlantic and a subsequent period of unexplained blackout we have made a forced landing in some kind of vast structure inhabited by what can only be described as...giants!!
I say again, giants.
As incredible as it sounds all passengers and crew have confirmed these sightings and have recorded visuals using on-board cameras.
We have so far remained unnoticed but believe it is only a matter of time before the giants see us.
Spindrift 612, aircraft down. Repeat, air-
One of the giants.
It's looking right at us!
Walking this way.....
A friend (ta Callum!) alerted me to this butterfly that was trapped in the lobby of a Melbourne skyscraper. "Have you got your camera?" Callum's an artist too, he grinned and said something like "The light is great!"
Beaut! I grabbed a plastic cup and the camera and went and took some pictures, moving around so the overhead lights would create interesting shadows and highlights and a symetrical composition as the butterfly patiently sat on the wall.
Later, as I uploaded the picture I realised that there was something about the poor wee beastie's isolation in an overwhelmingly large alien environment that reminded me a lot of Irwin Allen's "Land Of The Giants" television show. With me as the giant!
Oh, and the plastic cup?
Well, of course, after the picture 'capture' I carefully captured the butterfly, making sure not to damage its wings. I took it outside and released it, safe and sound.
We never did find out what happened to poor old Spindrift and her passengers and crew....perhaps some benevolent giant somehow helped them escape back to Earth....where they'd have one helluva travel story to tell!
By the way, in the late 1960s Science Fiction author Murray Leinster (William Fitzgerald Jenkins) wrote three excellent tie-in novels that intelligently expanded upon the original series....worth looking for if you're a fan!
